Could NFC scanning be added alongside QR codes, we currently use QR codes for security patrols and other inspections and NFC offers a significant improvement in efficiency, reliability, and security. The current QR system requires staff to scan QR codes at specific locations or on equipment to verify their presence, using a 32-digit hexadecimal identifier for security. However, this approach has several limitations. QR codes can be challenging to scan in low-light conditions, such as during night patrols, and they are prone to damage from environmental factors like dirt, moisture, or wear and tear. Additionally, the visible nature of QR codes exposes them to potential duplication or tampering, and the scanning process requires precise alignment, which can be time-consuming.

By replacing QR codes with NFC chips, these challenges can be addressed effectively. NFC chips allow staff to log their presence by simply tapping a device near the chip, eliminating the need for visibility or alignment. This makes the system ideal for low-light environments, as NFC functionality works seamlessly in darkness. NFC chips are also more durable, being encased in protective materials that resist damage from environmental factors, thereby reducing maintenance and replacement costs over time. Furthermore, the security of the system could be further enhanced by transitioning from a 32-digit hexadecimal identifier to 128-bit or 256-bit encryption, making it significantly harder to duplicate or tamper with the chips. Unlike QR codes, encrypted NFC chips do not display their data visibly, and the logic for displaying context-specific questions can be hidden within the software backend, further improving security and operational confidentiality.

While we currently start our inspection patrols by tapping a QR code to launch a template, some of our inspection contain 30 - 40 check points each with a QR code and our biggest employee frustration is scanning the Codes.

Brian - a great idea, so great in fact that we’ve recently deployed this technology!

If you would like a run through of how we’ve incorporated NFC tags, feel free to direct message me and I can run you through it, or there is an article here https://help.safetyculture.com/en-US/004058/

We’ve started in assets, because it allows customers to store information, actions, inspections against that asset / room / location.

Customers have asked for tags with SC logo, so they know which NFC tag to tap when using the SC app, so we’ve created some tags and stickers. Highly durable and tested with customers in tough conditions - construction, etc. Depending on where you want to use them for, we’ve got tags or stickers.
I’ve attached a few photos.

If you want to buy some of these, again, feel free to direct message me (thomas.cooper@safetyculture.io) and I can get you sorted out.

Hopefully this is what you are after,

Tom

@tdcoop

Can you DM to discuss further?

@tdcoop I have run trough your guidance above and have changed the way we complete lift inspections and soon escalator and equipment linking the asset to a NFC chip, while this works well to save time in scanning QR codes it does remove the security element of the included Logic based hexadecimal.

This doesn't however, tackle multiple location assets. I did have hope that I come create 30 location ‘assets’ and read each on in a form to display the questions but this isn't the case. I really believe this would be a great added function to inspections that would suit Security and facility management companies that need to evidence that areas have been checked.

I have DM’d but no response thus far.

Thanks Brian. I apologise, i thought i had responded via email, but it must not have got through.

I understand what you are trying to do now.

Just to get some more clarity, would it be ok if they launch a new inspection ‘form’ at each of the 30 locations, or does it need to all be in the one inspection form?

Today - we can link a specific inspection template to the asset - so once they tap the NFC tag, the user can then launch the inspection straight from the asset profile page. Problem: it requires 2 clicks to get the inspection generated.

Alternative - the next alternative solution is that the NFC tag, which tapped, automatically launches the inspection (reducing the number of clicks required). We are investigating how difficult this might be. Would something like this work?

Alternative #2 - the use taps the NFC tag and it launches questions that are linked to the same inspection template for all 30 locations. This is quite difficult to do in the product, and would be a long way off.

Best,

Tom

Is there no way to add read NFC as an option in the data capture options menu for a text answer within a template in the same way the app scans a QR codes and adds the text result. My questions would be displayed using logic functions if they scanned the right NFC.
